 Researchers at the department of Counselling Psychology at OISE/ University of Toronto are looking for Immigrant Professionals to participate in a career retraining study.

If you:

- Came to Canada as an immigrant within the timeframe of January 1,

1999 to December 30, 2006

- Have a university that was earned outside of Canada

- Worked full-time in a professional occupation in your country of origin for at least 3 years before coming to Canada

- Engaged in retraining in Canada and earned a university, college or professionally certified and formal diploma, certificate, certification or accreditation (records/proof of retraining/program completion required)

- Have held employment in Canada (full-time or part-time), for a minimum of 3 years after completing Canadian retraining

- Are at least 25 years of age and older

06/03/2011 China Import and Export Fair Informational Session
On Friday, June 3 in Toronto, join CCBC for an informational session to introduce Canadian companies to the China Import and Export Fair, October 15 - November 4 in Guangzhou, China. Widely known as the "Canton Fair," this biannual event has won the reputation as China's largest and most important exhibition. Many think of the Fair as simply a place to source product, but this event is not the Canton Fair you thought you knew.  Now facilitating imports, the Canton Fair provides a channel to reach China's growing consumer market; as China reworks its economical model to promote domestic consumption, the appetite for foreign, industrial, and consumer products is increasing rapidly. 
 
The Fair attracts over 20,000 professionals from around the world, including more than 150 of the world's top 250 retailers. Held at the China Import and Export Complex - the largest exhibition space in Asia, the event boasts over 58,000 exhibition stands that showcase over 150,000 products from sectors that include light industry, textile and garments, and high-tech products. A state-level exhibition, the Canton Fair is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce, the Government of Guangdong Province, and is organized by the China Foreign Trade Centre (CFTC).
 
On June 3 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, come and hear from Mr. REN Xiangdong, the Canton Fair's Deputy Director General about attending or exhibiting at the Fair. A keynote address will be followed by a question period, networking, and lunch. Representatives from the Chinese Embassy and from the Canadian government will also be in attendance.

Enterprise Toronto in partnership with Ministry of Economic Development and Trade offers the Summer Company Program. It is an excellent initiative aimed at supporting enterprising students aged 15-29 to start up and operate their own business during the summer.

 

The successful candidates are eligible to obtain an award of up to $1,500 to put toward start-up costs and up to $1,500 upon successful completion of the program. In addition, they will receive hands on business training and coaching from community business leaders throughout the operations of the summer enterprise.

04/06/2011 TDSB’s Teaching Mandarin Degree Program Now Opens for Application

TDSB’s Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language Degree Program Opens for Application

The TDSB Continuing Education Department is delighted to be able to offer a second opportunity for adults to participate in the Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language Degree Program in cooperation with Qiaoban (Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of State Council) and Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China.

The program is for instructors and teachers of Mandarin and for those teachers who would like to improve their Mandarin language skills and teaching methodology through university level courses. It will be offered over three summers, beginning in the summer 2011. Participants will attend Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China for 2 summers (2011 and 2013). In the second year of the program, (summer 2012), the training will be held in Toronto. The courses will mainly consist of classroom instruction complemented with corresponding learning and self study.

1st year: July 11-31, 2011
2nd year: June 25- July 15, 2012
3rd year: July 8-28, 2013

The tuition fee for this summer will be $395 payable to Toronto District School Board Continuing Education. This fee includes a $50 non-refundable entrance examination fee. Successful applicants will be responsible for their own travel costs, travel visa, medical and travel insurance and any additional travel costs related to travel and sightseeing. Accommodation and meals in China will be provided.

In order to qualify for the program, applicants must:

Have completed a post-secondary diploma or degree.

Pass an entrance examination to be eligible for the program.

The entrance examination will be scheduled for 6:00 pm, Wednesday May 11, 2011 at Georges Vanier Secondary School. (3000 Don Mills Road)

The entrance examination will be administered by the professors from Liaoning Normal University. The subjects for the examinations are: Modern Chinese, Chinese Culture and Knowledge of Literature.

Let the Government know Newcomers’ needs

The Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) has launched an online survey as part of a province-wide study of immigrant service needs and usage called Making Ontario Home. The survey will gather information about the service needs of immigrants to Ontario, assess their satisfaction with services, and identify how services might be improved. The study is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI).
All citizens, permanent residents, refugee claimants, temporary students, temporary workers and non-status people who have been in Canada for 6 months to 10 years are encouraged to participate in an online survey.
